  | FRESHLY SQUEEZED w. OZI BATLA, SKY'HIGH, P.SMURF, & more
Annandale Hotel Cnr. Parramatta Rd & Nelson St Annandale, NSW Australia
Friday 31 Aug 2012 8:00 PM |
Sydneys premier Hip Hop night Freshly Squeezed has returned to its new home at The Annandale Hotel. To celebrate we are putting on a massive party, with some of the finest established, and up and coming artists, Australia has to offer. Headlining the night we have Elefant Tracks representatives Ozi Batla (The Herd), and newly appointed queen of the scene Sky High. To top it off, we have a solo performance from Daily Meds frontman P.Smurf. Plus sets by local legends, Jackie Onassis and Crochet Crooks. This event is an insanely good deal with a mere $10 wallet damage and a free drink at the door for presale buyers. OZI BATLA is one of Australia's best known MCs, fronting both The Herd and Astronomy Class, while also being a founding member of the long standing Sydney record label Elefant Tracks. In 2010 he released his first solo album Wild Colonial. Far from a one-dimensional MC, his vocal range is as evident live as on record. He is comfortable working in a variety of styles, from straight hip hop in his work with Chasm, melodic with The Herd, on a reggae tip with Astronomy Class, or, occasionally still, in a drum n bass style SKY’HIGH is Australia’s most compelling Hip Hop artist yet. She displays a raw and aggressive style born from the gutters of Sydney. Tough as nails from a glance but catch a glimpse of that disarming smile and you get a hint there’s a lot more to this character than meets the eye. Voted Best Female MC in the 2010 Ozhiphop Awards, Sky’high cites Bobbi Sykes, Betty Davis and The Last Kinection as influences, but there’s little doubt that there is no one on the planet that sounds quite like her. Although it’s early days, her co-signs tell a story. The highly acclaimed and respected NZ producer P-Money is handling the entire album’s production; and even more surprising, Sydney’s Elefant Traks have signed her. P.SMURF has been a prominent member of Sydney Hip Hop for some time now. A founding member of Sydney record label Big Village, he has been performing throughout Sydney and Australia in a range of groups such as Daily Meds, Sketch The Rhyme and Reverse Polarities. He is now set to release his first solo mixtape this september, followed by an E.P later this year. His live shows are known for there high energy, rapid flow lyricism while succinctly conveying a underlying sociopolitical message. Definatley an artist to look out for in the coming years. JACKIE ONNASIS, a duo consisting of Kai Tan and Raph Zarkov. The guys met in high school and are both currently in our last year of uni. Zarkov handles the majority of the beats and Kai the majority of the rhyming and singing, although both contribute to all aspects. Merging many different styles of music, they are bringing something refreshingly different to the scene. CROCHET CROOKS are looking to make something which challenges what you thought you knew about hip hop. Composed of emcees Jax and Sayso, both aged just 21 and hailing from the Inner-West suburbs of Sydney, the group draws its influences largely from hip hop; commercial, underground, Australian, UK and otherwise. Combining this love with an extensive and hugely talented friend network of musicians, as well as their own musical experimentation during high school, the Crooks have developed a sound a little different to what you might have heard before. Fusing acoustic guitar with jazz, catchy hooks with evocative lyricism, a range of amazing vocalists and some downright grimy beats, the Crooks have something to offer everyone. Whether you like your music thought-provoking and introspective, or you’re out for a big night on the town and need to set the scene, there's a Crooks track with your name on it.
